This last week I discovered Fort Minor, which is Mike Shinoda's side project. There are a few very good songs on The Rising Tied album. Especially Kenji which is one of these emotional pieces that almost bring a tear to your eye. It is based on the history of Mike's Japanese American family during WWII. Just hear it and listen closely to the lyrics. It makes you think about the current situation of the world and the minimal progress that we've made since WWII.

Where'd you go on the same album is also worth hearing. With the way my career is going, I fear, this song is something me and Marieta can very much relate to.

I also discovered a movie called "The Corporation", which is a documentary about corporations as entities in our global society. It is in my "mandatory films to see" list. For me it is one of these movies that change your perspective.

I'm becoming dangerously political.

Fort Minor - Kenji (album version)

My father came from Japan in 1905
He was 15 when he immigrated from Japan
He, he... he worked until he was able to buy this patch
And build a store

Let me tell you the story in the form of a dream,
I don't know why I have to tell it but I know what it means,
Close your eyes, just picture the scene,
As I paint it for you, it was World War II,
When this man named Kenji woke up,
Ken was not a soldier,
He was just a man with a family who owned a store in LA,
That day, he crawled out of bed like he always did,
Bacon and eggs with wife and kids,
He lived on the second floor of a little store he ran,
He moved to LA from Japan,
They called him 'Immigrant,'
In Japanese, he'd say he was called "Issei,"
That meant 'First Generation In The United States,'
When everyone was afraid of the Germans, afraid of the Japs,
But most of all afraid of a homeland attack,
And that morning when Ken went out on the doormat,
His world went black 'cause,
Right there; front page news,
Three weeks before 1942,
"Pearl Harbour's Been Bombed And The Japs Are Comin',"
Pictures of soldiers dyin' and runnin',
Ken knew what it would lead to,
Just like he guessed, the President said,
"The evil Japanese in our home country will be locked away,"
They gave Ken, a couple of days,
To get his whole life packed in two bags,
Just two bags, couldn't even pack his clothes,
Some folks didn't even have a suitcase, to pack anything in,
So two trash bags was all they gave them,
When the kids asked mum "Where are we goin'?"
Nobody even knew what to say to them,
Ken didn't wanna lie, he said "The US is lookin' for spies,
So we have to live in a place called Manzanar,
Where a lot of Japanese people are,"
Stop it don't look at the gunmen,
You don't wanna get the soldiers wonderin',
If you gonna run or not,
'Cause if you run then you might get shot,
Other than that try not to think about it,
Try not to worry 'bout it; bein' so crowded,
Someday we'll get out, someday, someday.

As soon as war broke out
The FBI came and they just come to the house and
"You have to come"
"All the Japanese have to go"
They took Mr. Nee
People didn't understand
Why did they have to take him?
Because he's an innocent labourer

So now they're in a town with soldiers surroundin' them,
Every day, every night look down at them,
From watch towers up on the wall,
Ken couldn't really hate them at all;
They were just doin' their job and,
He wasn't gonna make any problems,
He had a little garden with vegetables and fruits that,
He gave to the troops in a basket his wife made,
But in the back of his mind, he wanted his family's life saved,
Prisoners of war in their own damn country,
What for?

Time passed in the prison town,
He wanted them to live it down when they were free,
The only way out was joinin' the army,
And supposedly, some men went out for the army, signed on,
And ended up flyin' to Japan with a bomb,
That 15 kilotonne blast, put an end to the war pretty fast,
Two cities were blown to bits; the end of the war came quick,
Ken got out, big hopes of a normal life, with his kids and his wife,
But, then they got back to their home and,
What they saw made them feel so alone,
These people had trashed every room,
Smashed in the windows and bashed in the doors,
Written on the walls and the floor,
"Japs not welcome anymore."
And Kenji dropped both of his bags at his sides and just stood outside,
He, looked at his wife without words to say,
She looked back at him wiped the tears away,
And, said "Someday we'll be okay, someday,"
Now the names have been changed, but the story's true,
My family was locked up back in '42,
My family was there it was dark and damp,
And they called it an internment camp

When we first got back from camp...
It was... pretty... pretty bad

I, I remember my husband said
"Are we gonna stay 'til last?"
Then my husband died before they close the camp.

In case you missed the last two total ecliplipses in the region - 1999 and 2006, you'll have to wait for a while for your next chance to catch one.

To avoid telescope shake use a remote control or timer.
Never store pictures in JPEG. Always use RAW.
A telescope with a shorter focal length may actually be a good thing.

Gear used to catch this one:
- Garmin GPSMAP 60CS to get to the right place easily
- 90mm Maksutov telescope, 1200mm focal length, f/13.3
- Nikon D70 camera
- Gimp 2.0
- Image above is a full frame captured through the telescope. Corrected: curves, selctive blur, resize

Well, in the field of supercomputers performance has grown consitently at a rate of around 88% per year for 12 years - circa 2000 times over since 1993. The rate of growth in this area is twice that of single processor performance which is 40%-50% per year. I find this amazing.

I bought a new toy and after a couple of days of playing with the settings I came up with the idea that I could draw some images out of the data recorded by the device.
Another week of recording high-resolution tracks and another 2 days of writing Perl code I came up with the following images.

This is an overview of the whole dataset.

Resolution set at 20m per pixel.

Let's drill down a bit. The next one shows a large roundabout, on the inrersection of M1 and M50. The detail you can see is amazing. 1 meter per pixel.

This one is a shopping mall where I go regularily. Again 1 meter per pixel. You can even see clear lane separation on the road.

And the last one for tonight shows that I clearly need a roof GPS antena for my car. This is a wood area with bad GPS reception because of tree overcast.

Color gradient is red through blue for low to high speed. Density is for certainty of the data at that pixel.
Tools:
Garmin GPSMAP 60CS
Debian GNU/Linux
Perl, Time::ParseDate, Data::Dumper::Simple, GD, Graphics::ColorObject
A total of 280 lines of pure homegrown perl code.

Collegues are buying Mac Minis. - Highly recommended

I bought myself a Nikon D70 with the kit lens and an SB-800 flash. Plus some accessories of course. The kit is simply amazing. If you don't listen to pixel counters the D70 is as good as the Canon 20D, but for half the price. - Highly recommended

I'm going on a one-week vacation to Budapest with Eti starting Apr 1st. I'm open to suggestions about places that we should visit there.

It snowed today.

Kinetic energy is the energy of motion. An object which has motion - whether it be vertical or horizontal motion - has kinetic energy. To put some more context, moving cars have kinetic energy. The kinetic energy of a body is calculated using the following formula KE=m* v2/2, where m is its inertial mass and v is the velosity of the body. It, as all other energies, is measured in Jaules (J), J = kg * m2 / s2.

Now here is a little quiz for you:
Two cars are moving in parallel one (A) at 50 km/h the other (B) is catching up at 60. Both weight 1.5t (not that it matters). The moment the two cars are exactly in parallel to each other both drivers hit the brakes. Assume that the break force applied to the cars is the same.
Question: What was the speed of B at the distance that was required for A to come to a full stop?

Staight-forward human logic tells you 10 km/h. Hint: that's way off.

The answer is 33.2 km/h. Surprised? Sure you are.
